Although it is not the first thing associated to a white 21-year-old living in Sheffield, I am an advocate for the old school of hip-hop.
Having a Dad that blasted Public Enemy and Run DMC when I was growing up gave me a taste for the genre but it wasn’t until I discovered the likes of Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr and Jurassic 5 that I fell in love with it.
Old school lyricism and the raw organic beats is what draws me to that side of hip-hop so much.
That’s not to say I don’t love contemporary hip-hop. Early Kanye was my gateway into the new school and my all-time favourite is Kendrick Lamar who‘s ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’ is in my humble opinion the greatest rap album ever made.
I would always back UK hip-hop as well, with the likes of Loyle Carner, Skepta and Rejjie Snow killing it our side of the pond.
I just love hip-hop!
